Illegal Street Racing Facts

  • It is estimated that over 100 people are killed each year because of illegal street racing.
  • Over 7,500 citations were issued last year in California for illegal modifications to vehicles, a common violation for vehicles used in street racing.
  • The cost of bringing an illegally modified vehicle into compliance and range from hundreds to thousands of dollars (these citations are not simply "fix it" tickets).
  • The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded $4.4 million in grants to agencies to combat illegal street racing.
  • Not only drivers are killed and injured in illegal street races.  Victims frequently include passengers, bystanders and innocent motorists.
  • Convictions for street racing will likely cause your insurance to be cancelled and you may lose your driver?s license, assuming you are lucky enough not to kill yourself or someone else.

Occupant Protection

  • California's seat belt use rate in 2007 was 94.6%, well above the national average of 81%.
  • The teen seat belt use rate in California is slightly less at 88.9%.
  • Seat belt violations cost between $80 and $91 for a first offense.
  • You can be pulled over in California if you or any passenger is not wearing a seat belt.
  • The fine for a driver transporting someone under the age of 16 who is not wearing a seat belt is approximately $350 (this is for a driver of any age).

DUI Laws

  • The "legal limit" for drivers under the age of 21 is .01% (this is now both a criminal and DMV violation).
  • If you are under the age of 21 and are convicted of a DUI there is little chance you will be able to obtain insurance.  If you do it will be extremely expensive.
  • Over 1,700 people are killed in California each year in alcohol related traffic collisions.
  • Although the presumptive limit in California is .08%, even drivers over the age of 21 can still be arrested and convicted of DUI at a lower blood alcohol limit if they are found to be impaired.
  • Driving under the influence of legal medication and illegal drugs are still both considered DUI.
